Why grow saltbush ?
Oldman saltbush (Antriplex nummularia) is aN AUSTRALIAN native shrub, growing on a wide
range of soils across dryland Australia.
IT IS well adapted to low rainfall conditions and extremelY drought tolerant, In addition it is
frost tolerant, and relatively fire resistant.
Oldman is adaptable to most soil types including well drained saline soils.
Although Oldman saltbush is not the most palatable, it is hardy and responds well to grazing.
Used in conjunction with other pasture species, landowners have an opportunity for :
Reduced Erosion Risk
- protecting the soil from wind and water erosion through effective reduction in wind speed across paddock and binding soil to reduce runoff.
Drought Risk Management
- drought proof' the property, through strategic use of blocks of perennial vegetation in the dry seasons.
- added protection provided by the trees and shrubs will also reduce evaporation and improve the potential for crop production in dry seasons.
Autumn Feed Gap
- reduce and/or eliminate the need for hand feeding, and production of hay and storage for autumn feed.
Deferred Grazing
- allow medic and other legume pastures to develop prior to grazing.
Increased Carrying Capacity
- overall increase in stock carrying capacity through provision of additional feed and better utilisation of marginal land.
Protection For Stock
- protection for stock in inclement weather
Minimise Ground Water Recharge
- greater utilisation of available moisture on recognized recharge areas, reducing movement to discharge areas.
